The Divine Idol
In the sacred city of Bharuch, blessed by the pure waters of the holy Narmada River, resides the magnificent idol of Shri Munisuvratswami Bhagwan. The idol, in serene Padmasan (lotus posture), is a rare bluish-black idol radiating spiritual peace and grace. Measuring 35 inches high and 29 inches wide, this idol has inspired faith in countless devotees for centuries.
Bharuch – An Ancient Sacred Land
Bhruguksha, Bhrugpur, and Bharuachcha..are the ancient names of bharuch. This has been a center of trade, culture, and spirituality for centuries. With the sacred Narmada flowing by its side, the land itself feels blessed, holding countless untold stories of devotion and liberation.
The Ashvabodha Miracle
A divine event gave Bharuch its spiritual title of Ashvabodha Tirth.
Once, the omniscient Lord Munisuvratswami Bhagwan, while traveling near Pratishthannagar, reached Bharuch – a city beautifully adorned by the flowing Narmada. At that time, the victorious king was performing the grand Ashvamedha Yajna. A sacred horse, adorned with royal ornaments, was set free to roam as part of the ritual.
The horse wandered into the Samavasaran of Lord Munisuvratswami. On seeing the radiant form of the Lord and hearing His divine sermon, the horse stood still – silent, motionless, immersed in deep spiritual awakening.
The Lord, through His Keval Gyaan, revealed the horse’s previous life story:
The Lord revealed:
“In your earlier life, you were Matisara, minister and friend of King Pushkavijay of Champanagari, located in western Jambudvipa. You served faithfully but were once misguided in your spiritual practice. Because of those karmas, you were reborn as a horse. Today, by the grace of samyak darshan (right vision), you have found the true path of righteousness.”
On hearing this, the horse attained Jati Smaran Gyaan (knowledge of past lives), repented for past mistakes, and accepted the true path of religion. Living a simple life, and following righteous conduct for six months, the horse peacefully passed away and was reborn as a heavenly god of great wisdom.
That divine being, grateful for the Lord’s grace, built a jeweled Chaitya here and concentrated idols of Lord Munisuvratswami and even of his own horse form. From that time, the land was known as Ashvabodha Tirth – the place where even a horse attained spiritual awakening.
The Jataghari & Ghee Pot Incident
In one of the horse’s past lives, he had also constructed a Shiva temple and garden for worship. A tapas (ascetic) had been appointed to perform daily rituals there. During a festival (Linga Purana Parva), the tapas, while performing worship, carelessly trampled upon a sacred object. Seeing this, the householder sarcastically remarked:
“Ah! These ascetics are merciless. How can householders like us survive when even ascetics behave so?”
The tapas cursed him for mocking religious practices, and due to that karmic bond, he was reborn as a horse.
The Lord’s sermon helped him overcome these residual karmas and attain the true path, showing how one careless word or act of ridicule can lead to long karmic consequences, and how true surrender leads to liberation. This incident inspires all the devotees to maintain utmost respect for dharma and ascetics.
Princess Sudarshana & Shakunika Vihar
Among the divine souls who visited this Tirth was Princess Sudarshana, daughter of King Chandragupta of Sinhala. Blessed with Jati Smaran Gyaan, she remembered her past life:
In that life, she had been a Shakuni (bird) living near the Korantavan forest on the banks of the Narmada. During heavy rains lasting seven days and nights, the bird was hungry and thirsty, wandered into a city courtyard and was chased by a hunter. The hunter shot an arrow, and the wounded bird fell before an Acharya. That Acharya sprinkled pure water, and the bird, folding its wings in reverence, recited the Navkar Mantra with devotion. This act of faith led to her rebirth as a princess.
Remembering this, Sudarshana travelled to Bharuch with seven hundred vehicles carrying wealth, sandalwood, grains, food, fuel, and offerings. Initially, the local king, fearing an invasion, prepared for war. Upon learning her true purpose, he welcomed her and even gifted her eight ports, eight hundred villages, eight hundred forts, and eight hundred cities.
Sudarshana worshipped Lord Munisuvratswami, observed fasts, renovated the ancient Chaitya (built by the heavenly form of the horse), and established the tradition of Shakunika Vihar (Samli Vihar) – named after her earlier life as a Shakuni bird.
Other Karmic Memories
Sudarshana once asked her teacher:
“O Bhagwan! By what deed did I become a Shakuni? Why did that hunter kill me?”
The teacher narrated:
“In an older life, you were Princess Vijaya, daughter of King Shankha of Vidya in the northern Vaitadhya range. Once, in anger, you killed a snake named Kurkut. Later, you worshipped the gods and gained faith, because of that earlier violence, you were reborn as a Shakuni, and that same snake was reborn as the hunter who killed you.”
This teaching deepened her resolve for non-violence and compassion. She devoted her wealth to temples, pathshalas, and dharmashalas. After completing her vows, she fasted and attained the northern heaven on the fifth day of Vaishakh.
Renovations & History of the Temple
The temple became known as Shakunika Vihar, and over time it was renovated by great rulers – King Samprati on the advice of Shri Siddhasen Diwakar, King Vikramaditya, King Satavahana of Andhra Pradesh (whose flag was hosted by Shri Padaliptasuriji), and Aabhak, son of Udayan (minister of King Kumarpal), under the guidance of Hemchandracharya.
Later, during invasions, many Hindu and Jain temples were converted to mosques, including this one. Archaeologists believe the present Jama Masjid structure is the original ancient temple, where the idol of the Lord might have been safely preserved before being reinstated in the new temple.
In V.S. 2039, under the inspiration of Acharya Bhagwant Shri Vishramasuriswarji, renovations began, and by V.S. 2045, it was magnificently re-consecrated. Later, Acharya Navinsurishwarji and his disciple Acharya Bhagwant Shri Rajyansurishwarji graced this site, bringing great joy and blessings.
Speciality of the Tirth
Here, Lord Munisuvratswami blessed even a horse with spiritual awakening, making it one of the rarest sites of divine grace. Saints like Acharya Vajrabhuti, Bappabhattacharya, Kalkacharya, Mallavadisuri, Padaliptasuri, and Vijaya Sensuriji stayed here, composing many revered texts. Even Ganghar Geetamaswami praised Lord Munisuvratswami of Bharuch in the Jagchintamani Stotra on Ashtapada Tirtha
This holy idol of Shri Munisuvrat Swami Bhagwan is a unique divine attraction for devotees. The idol is 29 inches wide and 35 inches high. Adorned with thirty-five auspicious marks of divinity, it is said to destroy all worldly fears and fill hearts with peace. Crafted from pure white stone, it radiates a serene brilliance. Its moon-like shining face, broad shoulders and majestic chest inspire awe and reverence. The jaw region, finely sculpted and graceful, illuminates the corners of every devotee’s heart, filling it with divine light and joy.
Prabhu Na Dham – Shri Kalhara Parshvanath Tirth (Jainabad, Near Patdi)
The divine pilgrimage site of Shri Kalhara Parshvanath is associated with Bharuch, yet it also has a special shrine at Jainabad, near Patdi in Dasada Taluka of Saurashtra.
Ancient History
The ancient name of this village was Kalhara, and it is believed to be around 1000 years old. A few decades ago, seven villages were under the jurisdiction of the Court of Dasada, and Jain Khanji made Kalhara village his headquarters. In his devotion, he renamed it Jainabad.
The present Jinalaya is about 125 years old, but it is strongly believed that an even older temple existed here. The Pabasan (stone pedestal) found on site supports this belief of great antiquity.
Divine Incidents & Miracles
- This tirth has been blessed with many miraculous incidents.
A few years ago, at nightfall, a divine light appeared near the temple. It rose towards the peak of the Jinalaya Shikhar and suddenly, two celestial figures appeared, circumambulated the temple, and then disappeared into the sky. Many villagers witnessed this divine sight. - The sound of celestial music, flutes, and bells is heard at night even today.
- Saffron rain is a well-known miracle of this place. Whenever Sanghs (pilgrim groups) carrying trishuls (ritual knives) arrive here, saffron rain inevitably occurs, filling hearts with wonder and devotion.
Recently, a spiritually elevated yogi sage Bhagwant, after performing eight intense austerities, chanted here with full devotion. During his meditation, he received a divine vision in the temple garden:
“Shri Parshvanath Bhagwan, seated on a 6-foot-tall lotus, black in color (Krishna-varna), is hidden beneath the earth here. In the destined time, this idol shall manifest again for the world.”
We await that blessed hour with folded hands and faith.
Other Temples & Art
Apart from this main temple, there are no other temples in this village. However, in the ground floor of this temple, there is a beautiful Bhaktamar Temple housing a very impressive idol of Shri Adinath Prabhu. This idol, built recently, appears so lifelike that one feels as though the Lord Himself is seated there.
Being an ancient region, antique artifacts and remnants of early Jain architecture can still be seen around this village.
Access & Facilities
This site lies on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad rail and road route.
- Bharuch railway station and bus stand are just 1.5 km from the main temple.
- Vadodara is 77 km away, Jagadiya Tirth is 33 km away, and Gandhar Tirth is 45 km away.
- Autos and taxis are easily available from Bharuch for pilgrimage.
Near the temple, there is a Dharamshala offering all modern amenities, along with a Bhojanshala serving pure vegetarian Jain food and even a small Pathshala for children’s religious education.

The Divine Mulnayak Idol
At the heart of this temple stands the divine white idol of Shri Sahastrafana Parshwanath Bhagwan in the sacred Kausagga Mudra (standing meditation posture). This sacred idol is believed to awaken souls from Mohanidra—the deep spiritual slumber caused by worldly attachments—guiding them toward truth and liberation.
The idol is 58 inches tall and 17 inches wide, carved in the Karyotsarga posture, symbolizing complete renunciation and purity of soul. Its peaceful and bright presence removes inner darkness, fills hearts with devotion, and inspires spiritual upliftment.
For generations, this Bhavya Pujya Murti has blessed countless devotees and has inspired countless devotees to walk the path of virtue and righteousness.
A Glimpse into the Sacred Past
The sight of this idol, standing in the Karyotsarga posture, fills devotees with deep peace, joy, and devotion. The unique idol of Shri Sahastrafana Parshwanath Bhagwan, crowned with a thousand serpent hoods, represents both supreme divinity and exquisite craftsmanship. Its brilliance and fine detailing captivate the heart, filling the beholder with divine light and spiritual calmness.
From ancient times, hundreds of devotees have visited daily to take Darshan of this miraculous idol, which is considered a source of immense spiritual energy. The thousand-hooded serpent canopy is believed to symbolize divine protection, making devotees feel as if a celestial umbrella shelters their spiritual journey.
The Legacy of Sheth Shri Bhaidas Nemidas
Surat, at that time, had a large and prosperous Jain population known for its deep religious devotion. Many families used their wealth for religious and social welfare activities, such as building temples and supporting future generations. Among them was Sheth Shri Bhaidas Nemidas, a noble and generous soul deeply inspired by the teachings of Acharya Shri Jinlabha Surishvarji Maharaj.
Motivated by these teachings, he built a magnificent and beautiful temple and, on Thursday, 12th Vaishakh Sud, V.S.1827, celebrated a grand Prathishtha Mahotsav under the holy guidance of Pujya Suridev. During this ceremony, 181 idols of the Tirthankaras were consecrated through the sacred Anjan Shalaka Vidhi, with Shri Sheetalnath Bhagwan installed as the Mulnayak in the main sanctum and Shri Sahastrafana Parshwanath Bhagwan enshrined in the ground chaitya.
One year later, on Wednesday, 12th Vaishakh Sud, V.S.1828, additional idols were ceremonially installed with the same joy and devotion. In memory of his unmatched generosity, a Jinprasad was constructed by him at Shri Shatrunjay Mahatirth in V.S.1829, and he also established the Shri Sheetalwadi Upashray in Surat’s Oswal Mohalla. For these numerous acts of devotion, he was respectfully given the title “Ashadhi Megh”—like monsoon clouds bringing life and blessings to the Sangh, as he had personally contributed over 36,000 offerings for religious purposes.
Unique Artistic Splendor
The idol of Shri Sahastrafana Parshwanath is carved from a single piece of stone and rests on a beautifully crafted lotus pedestal, displaying remarkable artistic skill. Near the feet of Bhagwan, the idol of Goddess Padmavati reflects unwavering devotion, while the sculpted figure of Meghmali begging for forgiveness adds a deeply emotional touch. Surrounding the idol are carvings of the ten Ganadharas, symbolizing the first disciples of Bhagwan Parshwanath. This fine detailing makes the idol unique and spiritually powerful.
Miracles and Spiritual Influence
The idol is revered not only for its beauty but also for its miraculous aura. It is said that no devotee can worship this idol continuously for six months without experiencing profound spiritual changes. One of the most notable examples of its influence is when Tapasvi Maharaj Saheb Shri Jaisomvijayi, under the guidance of Acharya Shri Vijay Bhuvanbhanu Surishvarji Maharaj, successfully completed a 68-day fast (Upvaas) in front of this idol without any obstacles. Even today, devotees believe the idol radiates a divine energy that inspires penance, devotion, and inner peace.
Preservation and Renovation
To preserve its ancient glory, recent renovations were undertaken with great care to maintain the original beauty and placement of every idol. The temple continues to stand as a beacon of faith and devotion, inspiring countless devotees and visitors from across the world to walk on the path of righteousness, peace, and liberation.
Sacred Occurrences
Incidents of the divine tears ( amijara) of Shree Amijhara Parshwanath and sightings of the Serpent God (Nagdevta) have frequently been witnessed at the sacred Shree Sahastrafana Parshwanath Jinchaitya.
One such incident occurred during the renovation of this ancient Chaitya, when the old temple structure was being demolished. To everyone’s amazement, flower petals and vermilion that were nearly 200 years old were discovered beneath the ground, yet appeared fresh and fragrant. Alongside them, a mud-walled pot and an empty pot were unearthed, from which layers of freshly scented flowers miraculously emerged.
In the year Sud 2035, during the holy festival of Paryushan Parv, ten serpents appeared as the marble wall of the sanctum sanctorum of Shree Sheetalnath Bhagwan was opened.
On Vaishakh Sud 12, 2037, thousands of devotees rejoiced as the divine tears flowed continuously from the idol of Shree Sahastrafana Parshwanath for several hours in the Bhoomi Gruh.
Again, on Bhadarva Vad 14, 2037, during the sacred Shree Ashtapad Maha Puja, a shower of saffron (Kesar Varsha) took place, leaving devotees awestruck by this divine blessing.
Evidence of Antiquity
The sacred name Sahastrafana Shree Parshwanath Bhagwan echoes through centuries of Jain devotional literature, bearing testimony to the temple’s revered antiquity.
It finds mention in the 365th Parshwanath Jin Nammal composed in 1655, and in the eloquent Shree Parshwanath Sanksha Stavan by Shri Ratnakushal in the 17th century, wherein Shree Parshwanath Prabhu is glorified as the eternal abode of bliss. This divine name resounds again in the Shree Parshwanath Stavan authored in 1609 by a disciple of Munishree Gunavijayji, in the Shree Parshwanath Nammala penned by Shri Megh Vijay Upadhyay in 1721, and in the profound 135 Naam Garbhita Shree Parshwanath Stavan composed by Shri Gyan Vimala during the 18th century. In 1881, Shree Uttam Vijay enshrined the glory of Shree Sahastrafana Parshwanathji in his 108 Naam Chand of Shree Parshva Prabhu. The venerable Shree Jinlabhasuri of Surat, deeply devoted to Shree Sahastrafana Parshwanathji, composed a heartfelt Stavan in his praise, while numerous poets, including Shree Kshamakalyan, enriched the legacy of this sacred pilgrimage with their inspiring Stavans. Moreover, Shree Mohanlalji, in Shree Ratnasagar Part 2, chronicled the noble deeds of Shree Bhaidasji, further affirming the temple’s timeless sanctity and spiritual eminence.
Abodes of God are many
The main pilgrimage site of Shri Sahastrafana Parshvanathji is in Surat. However, the divine beauty of Shri Sahastrafana Parshvanathji’s idols can also be experienced at many holy places across India. In Ahmedabad, these sacred idols are present in Lambesarni Pol, Shantinathji’s Pol, Taliyani Pol, and Samet Shikharni Pol. Their spiritual presence also graces Tangadia Wada of Patan, Bambawali Sheri of Radhanpur, Sanwal in Banaskantha district, and Vadnagar.
On the sacred Shatrunjaya Tirthadhiraj, an idol of this name shines on the marble temple grounds, uplifting the hearts of devotees. In Palitana, similar idols are enshrined in the Dharamshala of Moti Sukhiya and the Dharamshala of Narsi Keshavji. Another idol blesses the Merkavasi on the holy Girnar hills. These revered idols are also seen at Kolari and Goranka Lake in Jodhpur, Maldas Sori in Udaipur, and in the pious city of Jaipur.
In Mumbai, the divine presence of Shri Sahastrafana Parshvanathji is felt at the Paydhuni Shri Adinathji Jinalaya and in Ropala village of Maharashtra. The idols are also worshipped in the 13th temple of Bhildiyaji Tirth, the 41st temple of Jirawala Tirth, the temple in the Bhamati of Kavi Tirth, and the Gokhla of Shri Kalikund Parshvanathji Jinalaya in Santacruz (Mumbai). The sacred journey completes with the magnificent idol at the grand Jinalaya on Babulnath Road, Mumbai, filling devotees with peace and devotion.
